The FireAPI™ SDK provides software developers with all the tools they need in order to develop and debug 1394 applications in the Windows environment. It is based on Unibrain’s 1394 Stack Technology (ubCore™), the next generation of innovative 1394a and 1394b driver suite for Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7/8/10 and Windows NT 4.0 (via ubCore 3.30 runtime drivers only).
Moreover, it is the only 1394 SDK providing a complete User Mode interface to the developer.
The Basler BCAM 1394 Driver/SDK includes a fully functional driver for IEEE 1394 cameras along with a Software Development Kit. When the BCAM 1394 Driver is combined with a Basler IEEE 1394 camera, it offers users a low cost, plug and play solution. Basler products are found in a variery of industrial applications where the availability of power is always mission critical. Refineries, telecommunications towers, factories, or any other industrial application, Basler products are the solution for the control and management of electric power. The pylon 6 Camera Software Suite 6.1.1 for Windows is a software package comprised of an easy-to-use SDK and drivers and tools that you can use to operate any Basler camera using a Windows PC. The included software contains :
- ubCore™: Low level 1394 adapter drivers that provide the interface to all 1394a and 1394b devices. This interface can be used directly either from kernel mode client drivers or from user mode applications. The 1394 adapter drivers are bus manager and power management capable and come with a variety of specific 1394 device drivers built on top of them.
- User Mode Driver & DLL: The user mode DLL provides the ability to communicate with 1394 devices directly from within a user mode application bypassing the need to create a specific 1394 kernel mode client driver for each device in question which can be a tedious and difficult task to undertake.
- Serial Bus Manager driver: Set of functions to control bus management and isochronous resource management. Includes FULL source code.
- VersaPHY™ support. (Version 5.60 or later). VersaPHY is a new standard technology in the IEEE1394 family of standards that is meant to support the implementation of low cost devices, devices that don’t require a LINK chip (and usually an associated IP core) to function. - FireViewer™: A 1394 bus viewer utility implemented using the user mode DLL that displays the current topology of any local 1394 bus. Includes FULL source code.
- FireCommander™: A 1394 command interpreter tool implemented using the user mode DLL that is used to pass commands to the 1394 stack.
- ubTweak™: A convenient utility which allows the developer to control various parameters of the ubCore drivers and SDK.
- FireNet™: 1394 native networking software. Fine tuned for 800Mbps.
- SBP2 Driver: 1394 SBP2 external storage device driver.
- IIDC 1394 Camera Driver: WDM kernel streaming camera driver. This driver provides access to IIDC cameras connected to the system through any generic third party DirectShow based application. The driver also provides WIA and TWAIN support for Microsoft Windows XP and later as well as FULL integration of the device with the operating system.
- Fire-i™ application: Application ,implemented using the IIDC 1394 camera driver and DirectShow, that allows full camera enumeration, control and preview.
- Fire-i™ DLL: User mode C style DLL that directly communicates with the 1394 adapter drivers and provides a simple and robust interface that allows full control and preview of IIDC 1394 digital cameras connected to the adapter. The FULL source code of this DLL as well as source samples and accompanying documentation is provided with FireAPI™.

FireAPI™ / Fire-i API™ SDK licensing information
Any application developed with FireAPI™ or Fire-i API™ or Fire-i X™ SDK requires a license of the runtime drivers and redistributable software. Unibrain offers a variety of licensing options and customers can chose the one that is most applicable for their system.
The main concept behind the licensing, is that the drivers ‘activate’ (license) each firewire adapter or firewire camera that is attached on the system and is running the Unibrain software. In detail:
(a) Software licensing: Software licenses are in the form of product keys which activate the drivers per camera or per firewire adapter (customer choice). The GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) of the device must be provided to Unibrain and then we will return to the customer the activation code.
The device GUID can be obtained from Fire-i or FireAPI authorize utilities, as the picture below shows:

A separate product key is required for each 1394 adapter (or 1394 camera) that has the ubCore or Fire-i drivers installed.
(b) Hardware licensing: Hardware licenses are in the form of special versions of Unibrain’s PCI or PCI express firewire adapters, which embed a license. Applications running on top of those adapters will be fully functional and no product keys are required. Any device (including IIDC firewire cameras) that is connected on a Unibrain licensed adapter will also operate in licensed model.
A hardware license is also embedded on every Unibrain IIDC firewire camera. Below you can see an example from FireAPI™ authorize utility running in a Unibrain licensed adapter:

V1.0 - Initial release of the driver. Designed for use with Windows 2000 (SP2) only.V1.5 - Windows XP compatibility added. Various bug fixes were implemented. This version of the driver works with Windows 2000 (SP3) or Windows XP (SP1).
V1.6 - New features were added including a bus topology viewer and a bus access driver. Support for MS Visual Studio.Net was added to the SDK. The documentation was improved significantly. Additional bug fixes were made. This version of the driver works with Windows 2000 (SP3) or Windows XP (SP1).
Programs compiled against earlier versions of the driver must be recompiled against V1.6 to operate properly.
V1.7 - The driver installation package was updated so that the newest models of Basler IEEE 1394 cameras (A102f, A102fc, A600fc, A600-HDR) will be recognized and properly associated with the driver during installation. Small bugs in the BCAM viewer program were fixed. This version of the driver works with Windows 2000 (SP3) or Windows XP (SP1).
This is the first version of the driver that will let you use the 'smart features' capabilities on Basler IEEE 1394 cameras that are equipped with smart features. To use smart features, you must install the Smart Features Framework (SFF) software on your computer in addition to the BCAM 1394 driver.
Programs compiled against earlier versions of the driver must be recompiled against V1.7 to operate properly.
V1.8 - Changes were made to buffer handling, bus reset behavior, error handling during bus transactions and in structure and enumeration naming. The BCAM viewer white balance behavior was changed. This version of the driver works with Windows 2000 (SP3 or SP4) or Windows XP (SP1).
This version of the driver will let you use the 'smart features' capabilities on Basler IEEE 1394 cameras that are equipped with smart features. To use smart features, you must install the Smart Features Framework (SFF) software on your computer in addition to the BCAM 1394 driver.
Programs compiled against earlier versions of the driver must be recompiled against V1.8 to operate properly.
V1.8 SP1 - Support was added for Windows XP SP2. A DirectShow filter was added that allows DirectShow applications to connect directly to our cameras. Support was added for PCs equipped with multiple processors and hyper threading. Support for memory channels according to the IIDC V1.31 standard was added. The MS Visual Studio.NET versions of the samples and source code can now be compiled against versions 7.0, 7.1 and 7.5 of the Windows Template Library. The driver installation package was updated so that the newest models of Basler IEEE 1394 cameras will be recognized and properly associated with the driver during installation. This version of the driver works with Windows 2000 (SP3 or SP4) or Windows XP (SP1 or SP2).
